The 25% TCA peel is an extremely deep peel. We do not recommend the direct
application of this undiluted solution to your face. This peel in
intended to be diluted with the easy to follow instructions included
with the package. The 50% strength will end up saving begining users,
as well as long time users money, since the percentages can be
graduated as you move along with your regimen. There are instances
where you can apply this undiluted to a scar (TCA CROSS), or on the
body. We recommend using extreme caution when doing this.
Advantages of a TCA application
TCA will
improve color, freshness, texture, skin tone, and fine wrinkles. It
will also improve superficial discoloration, such as age spots. It may
improve blotches and can sometimes improve dark circles under your
eyes. Unlike deep peels, medium peels (TCA) may be performed safely on
people with olive and light brown skin. TCA is a natural 2nd step when
other acids stop producing benefits.
|
How TCA works
The first
layer is applied (approximately a 3-5 minute time frame) - the proteins
in the skin coagulate, then the peel self-neutralizes. Then the second
layer is applied directly on top of the first. It will go through the
first layer and coagulate the layer below (another 3-5 minutes) then
self-neutralize. This process generally goes 2-5 layers.** If you have never had a TCA peel before, we suggest applying only 1 layer
the first time you perform the peel. You can then strengthen the peel
with additional layers as you move forward in the process. We suggest
the 12.5% for beginners and those with sensitive skin.
**For reference - the Obaji Blue Peel is either a 15% or 20% (doctor's preference/patient's skin) TCA solution applied in 3-5 layers in a doctor's office. |
ATCA
peel can not improve dynamic wrinkles (smile/frown lines caused by
constant movement). To achieve the best results, you should use
professional skin care products before your peel (such as glycolic acid
15% cream, glycolic cleanser or retin-a) and anticipate that two or
more peels may be needed at one- three-month intervals. If you are
prone to fever blisters, the acid can cause a breakout. Prescription
medications must be used before a TCA peel is applied or the breakouts
could cause scarring.
Preparation for a TCA Peel
Preparing
your skin with bleaching products (if you have pigmentation issues
*read here!), glycolic acid or retin-a prior to a medium depth chemical
peel, will result in deeper penetration, faster recovery, lower risk of
discoloration, and a better result. Optimally, you should prepare your
skin for several weeks prior to an application. You may already have
prepared skin if you are following a professional regemine.
The Procedure
Medium
peels are usually performed as office procedures, but can done at home
with caution and preparation. The Obaji Blue Peel is a TCA peel, and
requires generally 5-15 minutes start to finish. The TCA is applied to
each area, being careful not to overlap another area (unless multiple
layers are being applied for a deeper peel). This should only be done
in a doctor's setting. When the desired depth has been achieved, the
acid will be splashed with cool water if any tingling remains. If your
skin has frosted (turned white), which is not very likely using the
12.5% solution, your skin will return to its normal color in 15 to 45
minutes. Your skin should be covered with an oil-based ointment (such
as Emu oil and Copper Peptide), or Bacitracin (or other comparable
ointment) to keep your skin moist and promote healing. You may have
slight swelling (only with the 20-30%% solution) which will go away in
a day or two.
Recovery
There
should be no discomfort following the procedure. You will wash your
face twice daily with a gentle cleanser and apply a moisturizing
ointment (as mentioned above). With a high % of TCA, your face will
initially appear red. Within a few days, your stratum corneum
(outermost layers of skin) will turn darker, and prepare to peel. The
flaking is usually complete in four to seven days. Once your skin has
finished peeling, you may begin wearing makeup. You should resume skin
care within two weeks of your procedure. Any post "flushed" appearance
will fade slowly over several weeks.
Cost
The average cost of a full-face medium chemical peel performed in a spa or office, will fall in the $500 - $1200 range.
Duration of Results
Most
people will be able to continually see the results of their TCA peels
for 6 months - two years. If you use professional collagen inducing,
exfoliating skin care products regularly after your peel, you will
maximize the duration of improvement. Most people opt to perform 1-3
more TCA peels throughout the year to keep everything looking fresh.
What is the Quality of Our Peel?
Our
TCA is a Reagent Grade (ACS). This is the highest purity level that can
be attained. It meets the standards of ACS Reagent Chemicals, Current
Edition. Reagent grade chemicals are high quality and purity for
laboratory use. The American Chemical Society Committee on Analytical
Reagents establishes the standards for reagent chemicals. All of our
peels are created inside of an FDA registered laboratory.
Read the instructions thoroughly before applying the peel.
The instructions you'll receive explain how to do a patch test to
determine what strength solution to use for your skin and how to dilute
the 50% TCA to the strength you prefer (TCA comes in a purified water
base). It's always best to start with a weak solution for the patch
test, then go stronger if desired.
Once the treatment is completed, you
can expect to shed the dead, outer layer of skin for approximately
three days. Following this, you can expect your skin to be completely
healed within ten to fourteen days. At that time you will notice
improvement in the appearance of your skin, which will have less
wrinkles, blemishes, and pigmentation problems. You will also notice a
healthy glow as your face appears radiant and shining.
TCA is a deeper peel than most of the
superficial peels that just cause the skin to lightly flake. Because it
is a deeper treatment, your “downtime” will be approximately one week.
During this time of peeling and healing, you will be required to keep
your facial skin moist with an antibacterial ointment. After you are
healed, sunscreen use is very important because you are initially much
more sensitive to harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Great for SUN-DAMAGED SKIN and DARK SPOTS!
Hyperpigmentation (darkened skin) and age spots lighten or disappear by
the medium-deep peeling action of TCA, which sheds off those damaged
surface skin cells, revealing new, smoother skin beneath. Greatly
improves ACNE and BLACKHEADS by shedding away the
outer layer of skin that blocks infection in the pores, allowing the
infection to clear out and the pores to heal! SCARS and TATTOOS lighten or fade away (depending on the number of treatments and the depth of scars/tattoos)! LIP CREASES
decrease in depth, thereby reducing the crease size and preventing
lipstick seepage. New surface skin is now is clear and smooth.
Decreases the size of LARGE PORES too.
This is the SAME solution used by Dermatologists and Cosmetic Surgeons!

The Treatment: TCA is a self-regulating acid which typically stops working after 5 - 8 minutes. However, we do
recommend the neutralizing solution of baking soda and water (listed
above) to ensure complete neutralization at any time during the
process. If the burning from the product is too much for you,
neutralize with the baking soda recipe provided above. Once the acid
is off the skin, the burning sensation will stop.
Use
the results of your patch-test as a guide for the length-of-time you
leave it on the skin. Complete and concise instructions will be
included with your purchase along with "what if" scenarios. We have
noted the items you'll need to provide above. All other items
necessary for the treatment will be included with your kit.
Darker skin tones: TCA
peels are not considered effective treatments for improving skin
discolorations in persons with darker skin tones. They are safe for
overall peeling, particularly at the 8% and 12.5% strengths, however.
After the Treatment:
Post-peel, your skin will continue to improve for 14-21 days as cell
turnover takes place and your skin returns to a normal pH level. Moisture - Use your Neosporin for 48 hours post-peel. We list excellent companion products, below. Store TCA Peels in cool, dry place for 18-24 month shelf-life. Formulated in the USA at FDA Registered Laboratory Facility.
